Blue Knights Show Improvement At Minnesota West
11/29/03
Wrestling with a squad of all freshmen and very little depth, the DCTC Blue Knights came out very strong Nov. 19 against the Blue Jays of Minnesota West Community College in Worthington, jumping out to a quick 12-0 lead.
However, due to two forfeits and the fact that the Blue Knights were missing their heavyweight due to illness, the DCTC squad ended up losing the dual 23-15. Overall, Coach Henry Gerten was pleased with his team’s performances.
Some highlights:
Tony Belvedere won a close 8-5 battle at 125 lbs. “Tony is very intense and will be a fantastic wrestler,” Gerten said. “He needs to work on opening up his offense.”
Erik Healy pounded his opponent 10-3 at 141 lbs. “Wrestling up” for the team didn't matter as Erik looked great on his feet and on top.
Also wrestling up (at 149 lbs.) was Tim Miller. Miller got caught on his back but fought off and pinned his opponent for a huge win. "Tim is going to be solid, he needs to set his shot up better and get stronger but I am very pleased with his progress,” Gerten commented.
Cory Warman moved up from 141 to 157 lbs. and lost a tough match 15-6. Though dominated by his opponent through two periods, Cory rode and almost turned his opponent during the third period.
In other action, Neil Happel lost a hard-fought battle at 184 lbs. wrestling unattached, and Joe Conley lost a tough match 13-2 to Minnesota West’s best wrestler at 197 lbs.
The final match of the night featured Sam Sadek of the Blue Knights who was wrestling for Jeff Lucas (illness). Sam lost a close tough battle 8-6 right at the end with a late takedown.
“We have a lot of work to do but I was very pleased with our conditioning, and our ability to work our plan on the mat,” Gerten said. “We still need to open up a bit out there and bring the wrestling to us."
