Smith Hired As New Softball Coach

11/02/07

Dakota County Technical College director of student life and athletics Cam Stoltz has hired Seth Smith as its new head softball coach.

"Seth brings tremendous energy, passion and coaching ability to our softball team and to this school," Stoltz said. "He has hit the ground running and is working hard to make the Blue Knights softball team the best it can be."

Joining Smith on the coaching staff is Michelle Harrison and Kari Hudson. Both are former college players. Harrison was on the DCTC staff last year.

Smith, a speech communications instructor at DCTC, brings many years of coaching experience - just not in softball.

"I’ve coached athletics for years at the high school level," Smith said. "My knowledge of softball is from watching softball on television. That’s why I brought in two very strong assistant coaches. I’m as confident of those two girls as you can be."

He doesn’t see his lack of softball knowledge as a negative though.

"I’m completely accountable for this program," Smith said. "I’ve coached many sports in the past and have been pretty successful. I don’t see why I can’t be successful at softball. The future will be a lot better than the past."

Smith takes over a program that only won four games last year.

Despite the struggles of the past, Smith has high expectations for the program.

"Our expectations are going to be higher," he said. "The goal at this level is to do well academically, have a good experience and win softball games."

Smith said that the roster is still in flux but that he has between 11-13 students interested in joining the squad and hopes to add a few more before the season starts in January 2008.

Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in 2000 and his masters degree in 2003 in speech communications from Minnesota State University, Mankato.

He taught at Bowling Green State University before coming to DCTC in 2005.
