Knights Drop Iowa Central 1–0 in overtime

The DCTC Blue Knights women's soccer team sealed second place in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, or ICCAC, by defeating the Iowa Central Community College Tritons 1–0 in an overtime win Saturday, Oct. 10, at home at the Ames Soccer Complex on the DCTC Rosemount campus. The second time DCTC victory has toppled the Tritons this season, the win moves the Lady Knights to a 12–5 record, which is on pace to be the team's best year yet.

Playing in harsh, windy and cold conditions, the Blue Knights knocked consistently on the Tritons door in the first half, but failed to score on nine shots on goal. DCTC would face a strong wind in the second half, only to come up short on six more shots. ICCC managed four shots on goal on the day.

The game headed into overtime and ended quickly as Sophomore Midfielder Kelsey Helgeson scored 40 seconds into the extra period. The win solidified the second seed for DCTC in the NJCAA Region 11 Semifinals. The Knights will most likely face the Tritons again.

"We know Iowa Central was looking for a break this season," said Head Coach Cam Stoltz. "They have had a difficult year to date with some real bad luck. We knew they wanted to beat us and get back to where they were in years past. At the same time, our gals have improved so much and are playing at a level higher than in previous seasons.  We are hoping for a strong finish this year."

Iowa Western Community College is the first-seed in the Region 11 Semifinals, having won a fifth straight conference championship.

DCTC has three remaining games, two that are conference matches.  The Lady Knights host Indian Hills Community College Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Ames Soccer Complex.
