03/26/08

Doubleheader slugfest produces 29 total runs.

The Blue Knights baseball team lost two close games to the Des Moines Area Community College Bears on Mar. 20 in Boone, Iowa, losing the first 6-7 and the second 7-9.

In game one, the Knights took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After getting hit by a pitch, Chase Brown stole second and third base before Will Dahlgren doubled him home. Dahlgren scored on an RBI single by Evan Lucius.

In his first appearance of the year, Dave Geiger was initially rusty, walking the leadoff batter on four pitches with another batter reaching base on an error. With two runners on, the third hitter drilled a fastball over the leftfield fence, making the score 3-2 in favor of DMACC.

DCTC trailed 5-4 entering the seventh and last inning, but put two runs on the board to take a 6-5 lead. The Bears leadoff hitter hit a solo home run to tie the score. Two-hitter David Kempin blasted a game-winning, walk-off home run to give DMACC the 7-6 win.

In the first inning of game two, DMACC sent 15 batters to the plate, knocking in nine runs. The Bears cracked seven hits with the Knights allowing four errors and two walks.

The Blue Knights held DMACC scoreless for the rest of the game, managing to creep back into contention with four runs in the third inning and two more in the fifth. Still trailing 6-9 in the seventh, DCTC scored one run and had the tying runs on base when a strikeout ended the game.

"Obviously, I give DMACC a lot of credit as they can really swing the bats and earned both wins today," stated Head Coach Tim Huber. "I was extremely impressed with the character on our team in the second game. They did a great job of climbing back into the game and giving us a chance to win."

DCTC now stands at 9-5 on the season. Weather permitting, the Blue Knights play a doubleheader against the Iowa Lakes Community College Lakers on Wednesday, Mar. 26, at 2:00 p.m. at Esterville, Iowa.
