DCTC Baseball Continues Winning Ways, Spurling Hurls One-Hitter In Win

WORTHINGTON, Minnesota - The DCTC Blue Knights baseball team continued in its winning ways on April 13, racking up two wins against Minnesota West Community College - 9-0 and 11-0.
In the first game, Mike Spurling recorded his fourth win of the year with a one-hitter that featured 9 strikeouts. Spurling is now 4-1 on the year with a 2.74 ERA. DCTC’s opponents are hitting just .174 against him. Offensively, the Knights had 13 hits with Jason Gergen going 3-4, including an RBI double. Mike Krejci, Steve Kleppen, and Nate Jackson each had two hits.
Highlights of the second game include Tony Rome on the mound, bringing his record to 2-2. Rome struck out four and gave up only two hits in four innings. The game was called after the fifth with the score 11-0.
Other notables included Alex Miller pitching one scoreless inning of relief, and the Knights piling up 18 hits in the game. Standouts included: Ryan Van Dusen 4-4 (1 2B, 3RBI), Alex Smith 3-4 (2 runs, SB), Steve Kleppen 3-4 (3 runs, 1 2B, 2 RBI), and Charles Stene 3-4 (1 3B, 1 RBI). Stene extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
In action on the weekend of April 8-9, DCTC recorded two wins against Anoka-Ramsey Community College, 7-4 and 16-4, and two hard-hitting losses to Hibbing Community College, 9-8, and Ridgewater Community College, 15-10.
“It was good to see the bats get going at the end of the first game Saturday and into the second game against Anoka Ramsey,” said Coach Tim Huber. “We had two very solid pitching performances and that is what we need to continue to win games.”
