Blue Knights Baseball Team Splits Doubleheader At Bethany Lutheran

04/28/04

The DCTC Blue Knights baseball team took one of two games from a tough Bethany Lutheran squad on Wednesday in Mankato. Winning 6-3, Coach Kerry Lurken said the first game showed players are coming together as a team.

Behind the complete game pitching performance of Tony Rome, the Blue Knights held Bethany to seven hits and no earned runs. DCTC racked up 12 hits in the contest for a season-high team batting average of .375. Standouts in the game included Troy Jacobson (3 for 4, 3 RBI) and Jon Poferl, Brian Jacobson, and Jonah Lansing (two hits each).

“This was a great game for our players and fans,” Lurken said. “It is really great to see the guys having a good time out there.”

And while the team lost 12-4 in the day’s second game, the Blue Knights still recorded 11 hits for a team batting average of .366.

“The key in baseball is having the key hits come at the right time,” Lurken observed. “We had 10 left on base and this really hurt us.”

Highlights for the second game included Alex Bruess’ solo dinger in the fifth inning, and two hits apiece by Brian Jacobson and Ross Metzger.

The Blue Knights close out their season this weekend with two games at home against Riverland on April 30 and the season finale at home against Rochester on May 1. Game times for both series are 2 and 4 p.m. and are held at the Rich Valley Complex in Inver Grove Heights.
